Opening a quick side thread to the Wifi question (yes, even us deceased engineers need to check our email on the move occasionally). Southern still has the information available on their website regarding their T-Mobile provisioned service : www.southernrailway.com/main.php?page_id=333Space has been earmarked onboard Class 375 units, either utilising the unused pantograph cupboard on non-AC units, or removing the never-used catering supply cupboard onboard to install the necessary equipment. Onboard the Class 395s, all the equipment is already inplace for services, all that SET would need to do is sign up to a provider, although it's unsure whether either types of stock would be fitted with wifi (as promised in the franchise bid), as the current trend seems to be individuals having mobile broadband by phone or USB 'dongle' - and that there isn't a system to provide internet access in the tunnels on the HS1 route (yet). As a side note - Class 395s have a 240volt power socket on each set of seats. Hitachi claim they can support a whole train full of laptops, hairdryers, small fridges.etc when the train is in AC mode or DC mode - although I wouldn't want to try it! First person to ask about wireless provision on Networker units, or even 508s needs to try and use a laptop while going down to Dartford after 7pm... bonus points if you still have your laptop at 7.15pm...
