Good Morning All,
Whilst as a dead engineer my seances are usually aimed at Railway Staff, I'm happy to talk to anyone.
I was contacted a short while ago by a passenger travelling from Ashford earlier this morning. Apparently one of the shiney new Hitachi 395s - in a 12-car formation - had totally failed in platform 6 at Ashford. Unit 395002 was surrounded by several confused/concerned and rather anxious looking Japanese engineers, all scratching their heads. Apparently it was eventually assisted by a pair of 375 Electrostars and shamefully dragged back into the depot shortly before my passenger departed.
I know there have been problems in the past with these units, but to have what was an apparent total failure so early on in their life is a little concerning. Let's hope they understand what went wrong today and get it fixed for when the new service starts in a little over 12 months time...
Kind regards,
Richard

Failure was due to faulty battery charger (all trains have batteries for backup and emergency purposes - if the batteries fail to charge then the train attempts to preserve what voltage it has by shutting itself down). Spent some time sitting looking unhappy in Platform 6, before being being unceremoniously dumped on the washer road in the Down Sidings.
Sources also report that 395002-004 have received 'southeastern highspeed' (lower case is deliberate) branding, 001 still retains it's Hitachi branding.
