Dear All, I'm pretty sure these are new and I have no idea what they are for! It looks like vertical metal strips have been stuck on the 3rd rail - does anyone know what they do? Do they somehow help keep the 3rd rail ice free? www.flickr.com/photos/71252638@N04/6441360569/in/photostreamI would appreciate your thoughts! NoOnions

Hi Chapelwood,
Thanks for your reply.
Pretty much what I assumed then? Do they take power directly from the 3rd rail? I can't see any wire between the strips.

Hi All,
I asked the guard on my train last night - they are indeed to try and stop the build-up of ice on the third rail.
Will they work though?!

They are for third rail heating. It is not a case of will they work, as they did work last winter. The problem usually came once trains got away from the heated area in a platform. But yes they do work.
