Hi
Obviously for a number of weeks now, major wroks are being undertaken at Faversham to extend the platforms and stregthen the subway.
Now one of the platforms are completely out of use and at the subway there is just a huge hole in the ground!
Does anyone know how the works are going. Are they likely to be done in time for the December timetable?

Hi Becs, The major works at Faversham are also there to modernise the station layout to make it more fit for purpose as part of the east kent resignalling scheme, which will modernise and update all the signals between ramsgate and eventually farningham road, and transfer control to the big newish building at gillingham. The plans at faversham involve removeing the cattle dock and the track next to platform 1, as well as moving signals beyond the london ends of the platforms.
The work is not required to be complete before the december timetable change, (as long as the station has 4 fully working platforms) but i suspect they will want to make all the changes in the station area quickly to permit the station to get back to being used normally.
As for the platform being out of use, i guess it is because the subway can no longer be used and thus thier is no safe access. i would hope however that the works will be continuing quickly to reinstate it as quickly as possible.

Platform one is out of use as the edge of the platform has been removed ready to widen it apprently.
The staff there said this morning that it may well be out of action until January. The closure of the platform is nothing to do with the subway. This leaves them 3 platforms basically.

Both sets of platforms at Faversham need to be extended (around 20 metres?) to take the 12-car hitachi trains. There isn't room at the country end to extend platforms 1 and 2 so they must be extended at the London end. This has meant that the subway has had to have some structural work and presumably the London end of platform 1 has now begun to be prepared to extend further towards Sittingbourne.
I believe that there is room at the country end of platforms 3 and 4 to exetend for the new trains but they have had to install a new signal gantry in preparation.
They seem to be coping pretty well at present and most of the time they don't need both platforms 1 and 2 at the same time or can use shorter trains on platform 1 if there is a Dover connection to a Cannon Street train, etc.
What I'd like to know is what the timeframe for the installation of lifts to the platform is.
