This morning (about 09.30) things ground to halt south of the tunnel leading into Sevenoaks. They were then start/stop/slow until past Orpington. The reason - we were informed by the driver - was.... "a late-running Eurostar between Sevenoaks and Petts Wood". So how often do Eurostars take the picturesque and leisurely route through Tonbridge as a diversion now and how do they get from the classic route to St Pancras Int.? I can only think of the West London Line but it seems a very long way around.

You must have been fed duff information about the cause of the delay. The shoes were taken off the Eurostars within days of their move from Waterloo/North Pole to St Pancras/Stratford, and they are no longer able to run on the third rail.

Good Afternoon,
As Chapelwood has already suggested, the shoegear was removed within a very short period of time from when the services out of StP started. So unless it was being dragged by a loco, I suspect the driver/guard was either having a laugh or was misinformed.
Another point to mention is, after Fawkham Jn opened, they rarely went via Petts Wood & Sevenoaks, although it was still signed by the drivers as a diversionary route.
I'd be surprised if a 395 test trip was being conducted during the rush hour (although these days nothing would surprise me!)!
Kind regards,
Richard T

My Earthly sources tell me the delay was caused by a late running MPV, 8Y73 09:01 Tonbridge Engineers Siding to Tonbridge Engineers Siding rather than a Eurostar! I would guess the Driver/Guard felt more comfortable using a Eurostar as an excuse, rather than saying 'MPV' or 'Multi Purpose Vehicle'. It seems that the MPV was late leaving the sidings and for some reason, was given priority over the two passenger trains trapped behind it. Not entirely sure what the MPV was out doing - at first I thought it must have been a de-icing train, but given todays events...
