According to the Gravesend Messenger, Network Rail are upgrading Gravesend station to include a 3rd platform to 'Ease congestion'?
I realise that there used to be a large turn-table platform near the Southern side of the station, but ti's been derelict for some time now, but it wouldn't be large enough to accommodate much beyond 6 car train, let alone 8 or 12!
Not sure where else a platform could go though!
Any thoughts?

I think you could build an island platform on the site of the down through and down platform tracks, then lay a new track on the site of the current down platform.

My understanding is that the existing up platform will become a 12 coach bay platform facing London. One of the through lines (I forget which but guessing at the down) will be lifted and a new single face platform built onto the up through line to make a new up platform.
The reason for doing this rather than putting the bay in the middle (to avoid conflicting movements) is due to limited space at the Strood end of the up platform not meeting required signal sighting and overlap requirements (even with trap points and sand drag).
The downside of this is that some flexibility with freight trains will be lost, at present some can be held if Hoo Jn is not ready to accept, or there is a train coming off The Grain branch. However a lot of the Freightliner trains are too long to stand in clear at Gravesend anyway.
I believe tied in with this is an aspiration to upgrade The Grain branch, and provide room to stand a full length freight on a new loop just on The Grain branch at Hoo Jn, clear of the mainline. As often the case, money is the governing factor.
