I Don't know if people on here know but rail users from Sandwich and Deal will have a new high speed rail service in the autumn. There will be three high speed trains to London at 0551,0617 and 0647, and will call at Deal 5 mins later.Trains will return from St. Pancras at 1740 and 1840.

Will this be a permanent service, or is it just temporary for the golf that's happening at Sandwich?

Will this be a permanent service, or is it just temporary for the golf that's happening at Sandwich? The golf service is for 4 days in July. The peak HS service for Deal and Sandwich starts in the Autumn (late September or October) and is experimental for a year. It's actually quite cheap to operate as it will use trains which currently run empty stock between Ramsgate and Dover, though to run in passenger service they will need a guard, as the line is not equipped for passenger Driver Only Operation. I believe it is being paid for by Kent County Council, and will be permanent from the autumn. It makes sense as these trains run through empty on their way to/from Ashford.
Personally I don't see why the Dover trains aren't extended through to Ramsgate right through the day, it would only take one extra unit, and three thrown up "spare" since last April when the Broadstairs - St Pancras trains dropped to six coaches.

Chapelwood What lines in Kent are equipped for Driver Only Operation? I'm sure the other week we got to Bromley South without a guard and were then chucked off the train before another guard was found who took us as far as Gillingham

What lines in Kent are equipped for Driver Only Operation? Most of the Metro lines are equipped, but not the Main Lines. Stations that are equipped have CCTV monitors or mirrors by stopping points, so that the driver can check that a passenger has not got trapped in the closing doors. Chapelwood

The Gene Genie Aren't these going back to 12 in May when the Maidstone West service starts, Rochester loses out and the Broadstairs trains call there as well. They may not 'need' to be fully 12 but 6 won't be enough (getting pretty full now by Chatham). 8 would be about right but of course not a possibility!

The report i read said, there will be a new service thanks to the support of Kent County Council. At a meeting of the Kent Rail summit at County hall, the leader of Kent County Council and chairman of the Sandwich Economic Development Task Force,Paul Carter, announced KCC's Support for the new service. If that means financial support I'm not sure.

Vinnie.

If that means financial support I'm not sure. KCC will be meeting the extra costs of the peak HS service from/to Sandwich and Deal for a year from the Autumn. These costs are limited, as the trains run anyway as empty stock, but there are costs of providing guards and energy costs for extra stops and starts. The franchise agreement means in effect that the Government gets the benefit of at least most of any extra revenue generated, though KCC are asking the DfT if this can be used to offset the costs. I'm sure the other week we got to Bromley South without a guard and were then chucked off the train before another guard was found who took us as far as Gillingham As a very rough rule of thumb, DOO is not permitted anywhere : south of Sevenoaks, east of Otford heading towards Maidstone, east of Swanley heading towards Medway south / east of Strood There are other exceptions or "local agreements" where for example, a train can run from Tonbridge to Sevenoaks without a guard but it can't stop at Hildenborough even if booked to.
